As a small business owner, I am continually fascinated to hear how other small business owners get their start. This is why I absolutely love Small Business Week, which is celebrated here in Columbia this week: May 5-9.
As part of the Columbia Chamber of Commerce’s small business week activities, five of Columbia’s most successful small businesses are being featured. Each business presents a seminar to educate individuals about their business, products and services. All seminars are free and open to the public, and the remaining schedule is below.
Yesterday I went to the seminar for Honey Baked Ham. I have drooled over their hams for year, and yesterday they demonstrated how to caramelize the sugar coating. I had no idea the blow torch would be so huge, or that sugar caught in midair would spark!
Honey Baked Ham is competing for the title of “Small Business of the Year”, along with The Lawn Company, Monarch Title Company, Surety Bonds and Focus on Health Chiropractic, which is a fabulous sponsor of Columbia Welcome. I highly encourage use of the generous gift certificate offered to newcomers in the welcome basket, which includes a complementary consultation, x-rays, an examination and a full report of findings. All new patients also receive a free acupuncture treatment.
I very much look forward to hearing more about how Dr. Curt Kippenberger and his wife Krista launched Focus on Health here in Columbia. Please join us for their small business seminar entitled, “Steps for Success: Building a Small Business from the Ground Up” on Wednesday, May 7 at 4pm.
