Passing the Basket // Part 1

The morning the basket was passed

The morning the basket was passed!

How it came to be…

Let’s set the scene… it’s 2019 and…. well… honestly, (and sadly) I don’t remember the rest…

REWIIIIIND - It’s 2012 and I moved to Columbia to start my freshman year at Stephens College. I graduated in December 2015 with a major in Event & Convention Management and a minor in Small Business Ownership. My sophomore year, a woman named Angela came to one of my classes and did a presentation on her job at Columbia Home magazine. I was intrigued and sent her an email after class to see if they had any internships available and if so, how I could apply.

We ended up scheduling a time to meet and fast forward - I was starting my internship with Angela at the magazine that summer.

Fast forward to December 2015 - I’m graduating college! At the time, I had a full-time job at a corporate office building. The money and benefits were great but I always knew it was an “in-between job”. I wasn’t going to be there forever but I was going to gain experience and learn from it until I decided what my next move was.

Come 2017, I decided it was time to move on. John and I had been dating for about 3 years at this point. He had a good, steady job that he really enjoyed and we had made the decision to create our home in Columbia. I had a good friend that owned a Real Estate company and my interest in the industry grew.

After a couple conversations, I decided to go for it! I put my two weeks notice in, was taking classes and the exams to get my Real Estate license.

It’s June 2017 and I did it! I passed my Real Estate exam! Starting out in real estate, it can be sloooow and it can take awhile to actually build up clientele and make money. So in this slower season, I reached out to the few contacts I made and held onto throughout my college experience - one being Angela Huhman.

Angela and I were catching up over coffee when she mentioned she was looking for an assistant. Knowing Real Estate can be slower at the beginning of your career, she asked if I might be interested in working a couple hours on the side for her.

If you know Angela Huhman, you know she has a special kind of energy to her that’s amazing to be around! And after working with her at the magazine, this was an easy yes for me!

So I started working with her / Columbia Welcome way back in 2017.

Fast forward to 2019, Angela was diagnosed with breast cancer. She kicked it’s ass… obviously. (again, if you know Angela Huhman… you know) but after going through that journey, she decided she didn’t want to be tied down to appointments and work in one place. She wanted to travel and live her life to the fullest!

The talk of her “passing the basket” to me enters the chat…

As I already mentioned, I sadly don’t remember the specifics of her asking me because I was SHOCKED.

This was never the plan, nothing we ever previously talked about potentially happening, nothing we planned for, etc.

But my answer was yes.
